Emma Riach, founder of this campaign, wrote an article on why New Zealand should implement a gender-balanced Cabinet, published in The Spinoff.
The equal integration of women at the top levels of our political power structures is a prerequisite for gender equality in Aotearoa, and for a healthier, more sustainable future. Aotearoa is ready for our first ever Cabinet fuelled with the talent, perspective, and passion of an equal number of women and men.

The most common criticism of a gender quota rests on a problematic understanding of merit and sounds like: “I think regardless of someone’s gender we should stick with selecting the best person for the job.”
Read why this understanding of merit — and the belief that our current system works on an unbiased merit-based selection — is one of the biggest barriers women face in the fight for equality.
We believe that public policy works best when it accommodates the needs of everyone’s realities, and that is only possible if our leaders better reflect our society.
While a 50/50 gender-balanced Cabinet is an important step toward that goal, it is not a fully-formed solution to the issue of the under-representation of all marginalised groups. It should be seen as one part of the overall fight for equal representation. We stand in solidarity with those who are advocating for better representation of LGBTQ+ individuals, ethnic minorities, and the Māori community.
We must ensure that our political leaders reflect the true make up of New Zealand society, with a variety of lived experiences and perspectives. This campaign should be viewed as just one important step toward that goal.
